Perinatal Period Conditions
Perinatal death is death between the day of birth and 28 days of age. The most common causes of perinatal death are birth defects and prematurity. Birth defects can be reduced with early and attentive prenatal care, and we have some of the best neonatal intensive care in the state. Preterm births can be reduced by reducing stress in the environment of pregnant women. Domestic violence (see graphs on Domestic Violence), which is all too common in Alachua County, is an important source of stress for pregnant women. One way that violent partners control women is by denying them access to family planning services or sabotaging women’s chosen methods of family planning. Long acting reversible contraception is ideal for family planning of women in violent relationships.
