Malignant Neoplasm (Cancer)
Deaths from malignant neoplasm, or cancer, in our county, do not seem to be declining. Deaths are attributed to our county by home address, so people who travel to Alachua County for cancer treatment but live elsewhere are not counted in these totals. To reduce cancer deaths, we need to increase early detection of cancer through screening and then treat cancers in their early, more curable, stages. Although Alachua County offers some of the best cancer care available in the state, uninsured people who live here in the county do not have equitable access to necessary cancer screenings and treatment.
