Domestic violence reports to law enforcement are just the tip of the iceberg, but can be useful when identifying neighborhoods for intervention. Local law enforcement and victims advocate agencies are working together to prevent domestic violence homicides by screening for lethality indicators at the time law enforcement responds to a call. People (usually women, sometimes men) with high lethality risk may receive additional services in efforts to assure their safety.Domestic violence is extremely harmful to witnesses, particularly young children whose developing brains assimilate domestic violence as stress. Increasing resources to reduce domestic violence in our community is a sound investment that pays dividends in future educational attainment of children, future health of victims and witnesses, reduction of truancy and involvement in the juvenile justice and adult justice systems, and chronic illnesses as adults.

Domestic violence and the location where it occurs is vitally important to the well-being and productivity of our county. We know from previous work that where there are more calls to law enforcement for domestic violence, there are also more reports of child abuse. Research indicates that exposure to domestic violence hinders normal brain development and can lead to behavior problems, cognitive problems, and health problems later in life. These subsequent effects each reduce productivity and quality of life.
