Diabetes Mellitus Death Counts in Alachua County (2007-2012)

There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 which is an autoimmune disease, is usually diagnosed early in life, and always requires treatment with insulin. Type 2 diabetes on the other hand is associated with obesity. It is diagnosed later in life (although we are seeing a decline in the age of diagnosis with more and more children being diagnosed annually), and can be managed with diet and exercise. In Alachua County the number of deaths related to diabetes has remained stable over the last five years. Screening everyone annually for diabetes and assuring access to care would reduce death rates from diabetes. Promoting healthy eating, including locally grown produce, and daily exercise would be helpful in prevention of diabetes, as well as improving the general well-being of our population.
